In 2007, the Modern Language Association (MLA) called for significant changes to world language programs due a curricular bifurcation between basic courses and upper-division content courses. Although inroads have been made in last 14 years, two-tiered curriculum structure still exists many programs, urgency coherence has heightened by dwindling number of majors coupled with institutional disinvestment departments. practice, when not undergone redesign, general remedy this divide is include more authentic target lower-level provide opportunities continue develop full range linguistic skills upper-level proposal, I enter conversation surrounding recommend supplementary approach previous solutions. explore advantages disadvantages expressive writing advanced propose that including assignments will help bridge curricula. More specifically, argue encourages students their voice from courses, activate background knowledge facilitate reflection on course content, lower-stakes assignments. also offer suggestions adaptable, assignment types
